Compassion Meditation, Forgiveness Meditation,
Contemplation of Not-Self (2011/2012)
Many modern people's hearts are weighed down by self-aversion. This experience – in essence, a habit of the mind – is both painful and debilitating. By understanding that ultimately there is no unchanging 'self' this habit can be seen through. The contemplation of Not-Self, and the practices of Compassion and Forgiveness are presented to support our letting go of grudges and painful, fixed views. While learning to forgive the 'conventional self', these meditations also train meditators to generate and then rest in an innate awareness that sees things as they really are – as 'not-self.' These powerful meditation practices when supported by the other practices of generosity, the maintaining of ethical standards of behaviour and the cultivation of Loving-Kindness - will after some time, assist practitioners in developing a deep and resilient sense of well-being as well as a healthy sense of self-respect and self-care. This is an excellent foundation for the ongoing deepening of calm and insight - qualities at eventually lead to an even greater sense of well-being that shines through, above and beyond any restricting 'sense of self'.
